Why Did The Disciples Cast Lots?

The Bible teaches that the disciples cast lots to determine who would replace Judas.  Why is this?  What do you think?

I know people have said Paul was the 12th Apostle chosen by God, but Paul had this to say about himself;

1 Corinthians 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

I don?t believe at that time the disciples realized that Jesus was the 12th Apostle or rather the first of the 12th Apostles.

Hebrews 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

Nor did they understand Jesus as now was the chief corner stone the builders rejected;

Matthew 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

So, before Paul, there had to be a chief corner stone Apostle to begin a foundation of the other eleven Apostles.

Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner [stone];
